Shenmue 3 Slacker Backers won’t get Kickstarter-exclusive rewards

Shenmue 3 developer Ys Net has confirmed that it will not be sharing the Kickstarter rewards with those who are funding the game via the Slacker Backer PayPal initiative.

It’s not all bad news though, as the studio revealed that PayPal backers will still be receiving their own rewards for helping to fund Yu Suzuki’s sequel, with $29 the minimum needed to acquire a copy of Shenmue 3 on PlayStation 4.

Ys Net previously held polls on Twitter and Kickstarter to garner feedback on whether gamers felt that Kickstarter rewards should be shared with those who backed the game on PayPal. The result indicated that the majority of backers were not bothered if the rewards were shared.

However, there was also a vocal number of gamers who were set against sharing the rewards with Slacker Backer gamers, as evidenced by this thread on Reddit. As a result Ys Net has opted against sharing the rewards.

To date, Shenmue 3 has raised over $6.5 million with Kickstarter and Slacker Backer funds combined, although it’s still a way off from the $10 million goal that Suzuki-san says will fully realise his epic action-adventure sequel. The game is scheduled for a December 2017 release on PS4 and PC.

The long-awaited follow-up to 2001’s Shenmue 2 was announced during Sony’s E3 press conference last summer, where it was launched as a kickstarter project. Any concerns that interest in the Shenmue series had diminished in the years since the last game were quickly put to bed when the project became the fastest video game on Kickstarter to reach one million dollars, with Shenmue 3 ending its run with $6.3 million raised

Shenmue 3 will feature the return of series veteran Corey Marshall, who voiced protagonist Ryu Hazuki in the original game and its sequel. The game picks off immediately after the events of Shenmue 2, with Hazuki-san now in China on the hunt for the mysterious Lan Di, who killed Ryu’s father, Iwao, at the beginning of the original game. Check out the latest details on Shenmue 3 to see how it’s shaping up.
