The hotly anticipated Silent Hills will be focused on ‘pure horror,’ creator Hideo Kojima has revealed.
Kojima-san took to Twitter to discuss the forthcoming survival horror project, which he is working on in collaboration with the famed movie director, Guillermo Del Toro.
From the sound of it, we can expect a return to the series’ horror roots with the upcoming chiller.
"Interaction is the biggest advantage of game so that u get to battle against monsters w/ weapons. That we call it an action horror,’ said Kojima-san.
"PT was aimed for a pure horror to experience the terror that u can’t fight against.
"Surprisingly there’re quite many people who want to play PT but don’t have PS4."
Silent Hills was released via a teaser trailer during Sony’s Gamescom press conference last Tuesday. The game will star Norman Reedus, who is perhaps best known for his role as Daryl Dixon in TV’s The Walking Dead.
The Konami-owned franchise first hit PlayStation back in 1999, and spawned three major sequels: Silent Hill 2 (2001), Silent Hill 3 (2003), and Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004). After this, developer Team Silent handed development reins to a number of western studios for subsequent titles, including 2008’s Silent Hill: Homecoming (developed by Double-Helix Games) and 2012’s Silent Hill: Downpour (Vatra Games).
While the franchise has continued to adhere to its survival horror roots more than its contemporaries—such as Capcom’s multi-million selling Resident Evil series—in recent years, Silent Hill hasn’t enjoyed mainstream and critical success for nearly a decade, leading many to call for a reboot.
Indeed, Silent Hills appears to be just the ticket that fans have been clamouring for all this time.
The game has only been confirmed for PlayStation 4 at present, though it is believed the project will also make the jump to Xbox One at some point. No release date has been confirmed.
