SEGA has released fresh Sonic Mania gameplay ahead of the platform game’s launch later this summer, highlighting the new Bonus Stage and Special Stage.
While these stages have long become a staple in Sonic the Hedgehog games, this latest entry in the classic platform franchise has shaken things up a bit.
For starters, the Special Stage has the Blue Blur chasing an alien UFO while gobbling up blue spheres and rings, while the Time Attack mode allows you to restart the level any time you wish.
The Bonus Stage meanwhile has you navigating a giant sphere much like those in Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, where you have to collect blue spheres while avoiding the red ones. If you grab all available rings you’ll get a perfect score and a Gold Medallion for your troubles.

Sonic Mania is due out on PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on August 15, 2017. The game is very much a love letter to retro Sonic fans, featuring classic 2D platforming action with sumptuous old-school aesthetic, which harkens back to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games.
The game features a number of classic Sonic levels such as Green Hill and Chemical Plant, while throwing in a number of all=new stages to keep things fresh. Three playable characters are available in the game, namely the Spiky Speedster himself alongside companions Tails and Knuckles the Echidna.
Sonic Mania is one of two titles released to coincide with Sonic’s 25th anniversary, the other being Sonic Forces.
