SEGA has announced that it will be celebrating the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog this year, although right now there’s no mention of a new instalment for the Blue Blur.
While we wait for news about a new Sonic game, SEGA is promising a “high-energy slate of anniversary programs” to “celebrate Sonic’s legacy while bringing fans together around the world.” This includes digital content that highlights the evolution of the character throughout the years, fan meet-ups, merchandise, museum pop-ups and art exhibits, live concerts, and more.
Marcella Churchill, Vice President of Sega Brand Marketing, commented:
We’re incredibly proud to celebrate 35 years of our beloved Sonic franchise with our fans. This milestone is not just a reflection of our past, but also a look toward the future as we continue to innovate and grow. We want to bring our community together and create memorable experiences for all our fans throughout 2026!
The original Sonic the Hedgehog game launched in 1991 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, and was also released for the Master System and Game Gear. The series saw a number of sequels over the next couple of years before making the jump to 3D with Dreamcast’s Sonic Adventure, and since then the Blue Blur has seen numerous entries, some of which have taken decidedly different paths (Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Black Knight etc).
Sonic Frontiers was the last major entry in the series, and launched for PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One in 2022.
