Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corporation, has admitted he was not aware of the three separate cyber attacks on PlayStation Network back in 2008, in which a number of European users’ personal info may have been compromised.
Speaking during an interview in Bloomberg, the executive also said that Sony didn’t at first realise how serious the nature of last month’s attacks were.
“I really don’t think I could apologize for not knowing. It’s a whole new experience for everybody at this scale,” said Stringer.
He also admitted that the electronics giant simply didn’t anticipate the intrusion: “We have a network that gave people services free,” he said. “It didn’t seem like the likeliest place for an attack.”
PSN is currently undergoing a phased restoration process, with the PlayStation Store still remaining offline following the “external intrusion” on PSN in mid-April.
Sony announced earlier today that it has scheduled maintenance for PSN to begin 7.00PM BST next Tuesday until 1.00AM on June 1, when it is expected the PS Store will be restored.
