A new blog post from Sony has detailed its fully recyclable PS5 packaging and the decisions behind the move back when they were finalising the production of the system.

In the blog post, Sony highlight that for the PS5 and its accessories all the packaging is designed to be fully recyclable and depending on the product ranges from 93-99% plastic-free overall (by weight).

The improvements implemented to achieve include designing the packaging to be fully recyclable and avoiding expanded polystyrene or plastic trays. Plastic cable ties were replaced with paper ones and plastic protection bags were eliminated for cables and instruction manuals where feasible. Plastic display windows were also removed for accessories and folding tabs were added, instead of glued ones.

But, Sony isn’t stopping there, this year they will test the inclusion of polypropylene recycled from post-industrial waste in physical game cases in Europe. Sony has also committed to continuing to review innovations and technical possibilities when it comes to plastic use and packaging.
