Sony Eyes ‘Really Strong’ Holiday Season For PS5, With Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Leading The Charge

Speaking during an interview with Barrons, Sony’s Eric Lempel revealed that the format holder is poised to record one of its strongest holiday seasons this year, with PS5 now readily available worldwide and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 obviously its major title expected to drive sales.

The executive also touched base on VR, which remains an “important” category for the console manufacturer.

Our outlook on PlayStation 5 is really strong. We’re expecting one of the strongest seasons in our history in terms of console sales. It’s a combination of the great product we have and the titles that have released since launch—as well as most recently with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Then switching over to VR. The VR category is important to us. It’s a category that can help us with innovation. It’s never going to be the only way people play games, but I’m happy that we’re in it. There are great experiences to be had and consumers really like it. But it’s a nascent business for us.

The PS5 was released in holiday 2020 in major regions including the UK, US, and Europe during the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, and was plagued by stock shortages that last for around two years. The console has since picked up the pace, and has moved over 40 million units worldwide.
