Sony Interactive Entertainment Network Europe has been fined $2.4 million by an Australian court for failing to provide refunds on faulty PlayStation games to four consumers in the country.

Australia Fines Sony $2.4 Million

The PlayStation manufacturer has been ordered by the court to pay $3.5AUD million ($2.4USD million), after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission filed a lawsuit against SIENE back in May 2019.

It accused the hardware giant of telling the individuals that it did not have to provide refunds for faulty software after they had been downloaded, or more than 14 days after the purchase date. In addition, Sony was criticised for failing to offer a cash refund, instead offering only store credit.

Rod Sims, Chairman of the ACCC, commented:

What Sony told these consumers was false and does not reflect the consumer guarantee rights afforded to Australian consumers under the Australian Consumer Law.

Sony is currently gearing up for the release of its next-generation console, the PlayStation 5, which is slated for release in holiday 2020.
