Sony halts development of PlayStation Room

Do you remember hearing about PlayStation Room, the social meet-up feature in development for the PSP, first announced at TGS 2009? The service was going to be similar to PlayStation Home on the PlayStation 3, complete with 3D avatars.

Now it appears Sony has pulled the plug on the Room project. According to an announcement today by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, the development of Room has been halted. Sony said it received valuable feedback from all those who took part in closed beta. Beta testing began in October and ended today as the service was shut off.

The service would have allowed users to invite friends into their rooms, chat, and customize their avatars. It’s unclear at this time why the service has been halted.
