A spokesperson for Sony Interactive Entertainment has commented on reports that the format holder has implemented a 30-day license check on newly-purchased PS5 & PS4 games, which seemingly required users to validate the license for your purchase or risk not being able to play it unless you connect to the Internet to perform the check.
Speaking to GameSpot, the spokesperson revealed that this is only required for a one-time check. “Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual. A one-time online check is required to confirm the game’s license, after which no further check-ins are required,” said Sony.
YouTuber Modded Warfare reported earlier this week that Sony’s latest PS5 system software update had added a form of DRM, which required users to connect their system online to perform a license check out PS5 & PS4 games purchased after a certain date. The 30-day timer is only visible on PS4, according to reports, although it is still ticking way in the background on PS5.
In wake of the news, GameStop took to X in a now-deleted post that emphasised you won’t run into this issue if you purchase physical games. Regardless, Sony’s statement is at least good news for people who were concerned that they would have to continually renew their license every 30 days, as it’s now just a one-off deal.
