It seems like only yesterday you could walk into a Best Buy and pick up a Blu-ray player for damn near $400. While this price point scared many consumers away, the current $200 price tag is starting to become more and more appealing to your average shopper. David Bishop, President of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, feels the same as he refers to the new pricing point as Blu-rays "sweet spot." In fact, Bishop expects the rapidly lowering pricing to cause 150% sales increases through 2009.
Bishop realizes that January is going to prove to be a very important month for the Blu-ray camp. After all, Christmas will see the unwrapping of plenty of Blu-ray players and PlayStation 3s. What better way to utilize these devices than to head out to an electronics store to pick up some high-definition titles to enjoy? Considering hot Blu-ray titles like Hancock are selling 300,000 copies within the first week of release, we could see quite the increase with more players hitting the market.
