The president and Group CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed that subscriptions to PlayStation Plus have nearly doubled in the past 18 months.
Speaking during a presentation yesterday, Andrew House said that paid memberships have seen “continuous growth,” rocketing from 10.9 million in January 2015 to 20.8 million.
Of course, PS4 online gaming requires a subscription to PS Plus, so given the success of Sony’s flagship console it’s probably no surprise to see players flocking to the subscription-based service.
Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE service currently stands at around 46 million monthly active users worldwide, although this figure is likely to include both free and Gold accounts.
In the previous console generation, Sony did not charge gamers to play online, with both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita allowing free online gaming. A year’s subscription to PS Plus will set you back £39.99.
Sony announced back in April that PS4 has shipped 40 million units globally.
