Sony says PS Vita has got off to ‘a good start’

Sony’s chief financial officer Masaru Kato has brushed off concerns over sales of PlayStation Vita in Japan, insisting the handheld has got off to a “good start” in the territory.

The handheld launched back in December 2011, posting a strong performance during its first week with 321,407 unit sold. However, sales quickly deflated and in recent weeks the device has been selling around the 15,000 mark, below that of PS3 and PSP.

"Now the company has not publicly announced the units of shipping and sales. At the appropriate time, we would do so," said Kato, during an earning call this week.

"But as far as sell-through, three weeks have passed and our sell-through is 500,000. This was announced on the 10th of January. So as a start, I think we had a very – a good start.”

He added: "Including software and hardware, we are carrying out the sales promotions and we do it to boost the sales, and we do not think we have any problems."

PlayStation Vita will make its much-anticipated western release on February 22. PSU will be sure to bring you coverage all major launch titles later this month, so stay tuned for more details.
