Sony Corporation has announced that it sold 6.4 million PlayStation 4 consoles during the third quarter of its 2014 financial year, which accounts for the period October – December.
In addition, the hardware manufacturer moved an additional 1.1 million PS3s and 1.4 million PlayStation Portable/PlayStation Vitas during the same period.
The success of its games division resulted in software sales hitting 147 billion yen, with network sales topping 100 billion yen.
Overall, Sony expects to post sales of 2,557.8 billion yen ($21,139 million) for Q3 2014, representing an increase of approximately 6.1 percent over the same period last year.
Furthermore, operating income is forecast at 178.3 billion yen ($1,474 million), which is a year-on-year increase of 89.4 billion yen. However, the company notes that the figure is likely to be offset partially by its flagging Pictures segment, as well as a decrease in the performances of both PlayStation TV and PlayStation Vita.
Note that the above details were labeled as a forecast, as the Sony Pictures hack in December resulted in the electronics giant having to delay its financial results. As such, these figures are given as approximations in order to keep investors in the loop.
Regardless, PS4 continues to sell in impressive quantities, giving the format a solid start to 2015 before the exclusives start to roll out.
