The president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) has said that games can look forward to an ‘unprecedented rush’ of major PlayStation 4 titles in 2016.
"It’s the year PS4 users, and those who are on the fence on whether to buy it will absolutely think," said Shuhei Yoshida (via DailyStar). "It’s good to have a PS4. Please look forward to it."
PS4’s lineup includes the likes of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (Naughty Dog), Street Fighter V (Capcom), and No Man’s Sky (Hello Games). In addition, Sony is also launching its virtual reality gaming headset, PlayStation VR, in the first half of next year, bringing with it a slew of first and third-party titles such as Tekken 7 and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood.
"It’s a completely new medium and the best of VR games will come out of nowhere, just as games on mobile or other new platforms like Facebook emerged," Yoshida-san continued. "The most successful game companies on these new technology platforms were not established conventional game publishers, but small startups that spent many years focused on making games on this new tech.
"I expect the same will happen with VR. Hopefully, all of the game industry will develop on this new tech, but the most successful titles will be something that we never thought of in a new IP or a new game that’s focused on great experiences."
Sony previously admitted that its first-party lineup for 2015 was somewhat lacking in comparison to previous years, with the format holder instead focusing on its relationship with third-party developers. This, among other things, resulted in a deal with Activision to bring exclusive content to Destiny and timed-exclusivity of DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, which Microsoft had previously enjoyed for a number of years.
PS4 was released in November 2013 and has since gone on to sell over 30 million units worldwide, putting it comfortably in the lead for the current hardware battle.
