John Kohler, Senior Marketing Manager at Sony Computer Entertainment America, has revealed that the publisher is keen to make PlayStation 2 games available for download from the PlayStation Store. Don’t rush out to thank the heavens just yet, though – actually doing so is proving tricky.
"We’re still sorting through that," Kohler told Gamepro. "We’re absolutely interested, but there are some technical hurdles there that we have to overcome first. But this is something that we’re absolutely interested in."
"You make good points, there are a lot of people who would be interested in playing the strongest PS2 games on their PS3," he went on. "Nothing’s imminent on that, but it’s something we are interested in as well."
This rather disappointing statement aside, Kohler gave an inspiring account of Sony’s prospects. 2009 will be a "fantastic" year for the PlayStation Portable, and the PlayStation 3 will enjoy "very long run of development strengths." If Kohler is to be believed, Sony reps will "probably be talking to you next year with big smiles on our faces."
Much of this is owing to the sheer extent of Sony’s development resources. "We would place Sony’s first-party developers up against any other team," Kohler boasted. "Our worldwide studios group is as large as Microsoft’s and Nintendo’s internal studios combined. Some of the games we’re seeing for 2009 are absolutely fantastic, and they will set the PS3 that much further apart."
