Sony’s Jim Ryan Dismisses Claims That Console Maker Is Shifting Away From Japan

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO, Jim Ryan, has poured cold water on suggestions that the format holder is shifting away from the Japanese market, saying the company is excited about how things are going in terms of game development in the country.

Speaking during an interview with Edge Issue 353, Ryan was asked about Sony making a “conscious shift away from the Japanese market,” something which has been flagged up by the company changing the function of the Circle and X button on PS5.

However, in response, Ryan made it clear that Japan is a vital market for the console maker.

The Sony stance is that the Japanese market remains incredibly important to us. We have not been as excited about the engagement of the Japanese game development community as we are now for many years.

We saw in the second half of the PS4 cycle a greater level of engagement from those Japanese publishers. That continues and strengthens yet again with PS5.

The PS5 was released in the US and UK on November 12 and November 19, respectively.
