Sony’s Plans To End Physical Disc Production Has Attracted Response From Multiple Companies Including iam8Bit

Various companies have responded to Sony’s announcement yesterday that the format holder will be ceasing production of physical game discs in January 2028, and unsurprisingly, they’re not happy about it.

Among those that have reacted to the news include iam8bit, which specialises in physical game collectibles and describes itself as “profoundly disappointed” by Sony’s decision to go digital-only. “Physical games are vital to games preservation, ownership, and consumer choice, values that have guided iam8bit since our first physical release in 2016,” said the company. “Long live physical media.”

“We are disappointed in the news today about the future of PlayStation video games,” wrote game-rental service, GameFly. “GameFly is run by people who believe physical products still matter. It is a belief that has been at the core of our company since day one.”

Meanwhile, Aeternum Game Studios, an independent development team, responded to the news: “We pledge to work urgently to bring every game we create-and those already on the way-tangibly to your shelves before that fateful early 2028 deadline. The industry may try to change its course but we will not let go of your hand. Your shelves will keep being filled with stories.”

The news that Sony is ceasing physical disc production has prompted analyst Ampere to suggest that the PS6 will almost certainly not launch until late 2028, although nothing official has been confirmed at this point. It’s also largely accepted at this pointed that the new system will not have a disc drive.
