The PS5 is set to be the most eco-friendly console yet, according to a new study titled Console Carbon Footprint. Unsurprisingly, the PS3, which was horribly expensive at launch and consumed a lot of power, has the biggest carbon footprint.
Study Finds PS5 Is Most Eco-Friendly Console
According to the study, the PS5 will cut emissions compared to Xbox Series X by 68.6%, and is the most sustainable console due to its 1.5x performance-per-watt GPU.
In addition, Sony’s new hardware is expected to produce 0.022kg of CO2 equivalent per hour, while the Xbox Series X is estimated at 0.07kg/CO2e in the same time frame due to its larger GPU.
Elsewhere, it has been stated that consumers can do their bit by purchasing digital versions of games instead of physical releases, which can reduce their carbon footprint by as much as 95.6%. A digital title emits 0.017kg, while a retail copy produces 0.39kg of CO2e via manufacturing.
Oh, and if you’re wondering what console is the most eco-friendly prior to PS5, it’s the PlyStation Classic. Unsurprisingly, the Xbox family are among the least environmental friendly consoles, with PS3 accounting for the most CO2e per hour.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X are both slated for release in holiday 2020.
