Spectre: Divide, A New Free-To-Play Valorant-Like Shooter Is The Debut Game From Mountaintop Studios

Mountaintop Studios, the team comprised of developers from some of the biggest studios in the industry such as Respawn, Riot, Blizzard, Bungie, and Naughty Dog are finally ready to reveal their debut project.

Spectre: Divide is a new free-to-play game born from developers who grew up loving and playing Counter-Strike and who have all taken inspiration from Valorant, some of whom have even worked on Valorant.

If you’ve played either of those games than Spectre: Divide will immediately look familiar, but its big draw is a twist on the classic search-and-destroy tactical shooting.

In the 3v3 matches, each player has a “Spectre,” a second body that they can swap between. Mountaintop calls this mechanic “Duality.”

You carry a puck-looking object with you at all times, and throw it to place your Spectre as you travel across the map.

When you die, so long as your Spectre is alive, you immediately transfer to your Spectre and keep playing. It seems to be a big enough twist on the genre to really shake things up from a strategy perspective.

Having a whole other life in the same match and not dying quickly only to watch the rest of the round would also likely keep players more engaged. We’ll see how it turns out when it finally makes it on to the market, since for now there is no set release date or window.

Currently, the game is only planning a PC release at launch, though of course there’s always the chance that it’ll come to consoles in the future, depending on how well Spectre: Divided does once it launches.
