Star Trek game ‘arguably hurt’ Into Darkness film, says J.J. Abrams

In an interview on GamerHub TV, Director J.J. Abrams says the poor reception of Digital Extreme’s Star Trek game may have impacted his film, Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Despite being tied to the game in an advisory position, Abrams revealed that he didn’t support the direction the game was taking, which led to him severing all involvement.

"[It] was something that we were actually involved in at the very beginning of it, and then we sort of realized that it was not going in a place where we were going to get what we wanted, and so we dropped out and they continued to do it despite,” Abrams said.

“For me emotionally it hurt, because we were working our asses off making the movie and then this game came out and it got, this isn’t even my opinion, it got universally panned and I think that it was something without question that didn’t help the movie and arguably hurt it."

Despite his disappointment, Abrams hasn’t ruled out a future for potential Star Trek games provided they’re not a cheap extension of another product. Abrams also goes on to mention his interest with Valve, and compliments games like Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and Tomb Raider for their cinematic production values.
