Symbiogenesis Is A New Square Enix Franchise Built Around NFTs

Square Enix has dashed hopes of a Parasite Eve revival, announcing this week that Symbiogenesis is actually a new franchise based around NFTs of all things.

According to the press blurb, Symbiogenesis is the company’s “first digital collectible art project designed from the ground up for Web3 fans.” It’s set in a self-contained world where “a wide cast of characters symbiosis, all of which can be collected as digital art.”

Players can collect the art will be able to use them “as a character in a story that takes place in an alternate world where the player can ‘untangle’ a mystery by completing missions that revolve around questions of the monopolisation and distribution of resources.”

Sales of the Symbiogenesis NFTs will kick off in Spring 2023, Square Enix said, and will be joined by a “free browser service.”

The news follows Square Enix’s plans to develop “story-based” NFTs during the publisher’s 2022 Shareholders’ Meeting Report back in June. The Final Fantasy publisher’s medium-term goals include “development of blockchain games and entertainment products.”

NFTs are no stranger to Square Enix, as they were among the first major publisher to support the feature. For example, the publisher has already started flogging action figures that come with digital NFTs, including a Cloud Strife figure that includes a Digital Plus Edition for $159.99.

This version is only available to purchase via the Square Enix Store and features “exchange tickets to redeem a digital certificate of authenticity and a digital version of the figure which can be enjoyed on a PC or smart phone.”
