The director behind Tekken 7 has confirmed that the hotly anticipated fighting game sequel won’t see a return of the much-loved ‘Tekken Tunes’ feature introduced in 2012’s Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on PlayStation 3.
For those unaware, Tekken Tunes allowed players to listen to their own songs while playing TTT2, and was a popular feature among fans. However, it appears that the PlayStation 4 version of Tekken 7 won’t be including it, as explained by Katsuhiro Harada on Twitter.
"It’s impossible for the moment. We require policy change with OS Update of SONY,” said Harada-san. “I continue negotiating with Sony. But It’s not too easy (include security issue) (sic)."
Tekken 7 was formally announced for current-generation consoles during Paris Games Week, and was also confirmed as one of the many upcoming titles to utilise Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR headset. The PS4 version of the fighting sequel is said to be the ‘most complete’ edition of the game, which has been doing the rounds in arcades since early 2015.
Bandai Namco celebrated the 20th anniversary of Tekken in 2014, with the original game launching in arcades back in 1994. The game was later ported to the PlayStation and became one of the first games for Sony’s console to sell one million copies, and spawned two hugely successful sequels, 1996’s Tekken 2 and 1997’s Tekken 3. Both games were also ported to the PSOne a year after their arcade debuts, with Tekken 3 becoming one of the platform’s biggest-selling games and the second best-selling fighting video game of all time.
The series continued into the PS2-era with Tekken Tag Tournament, Tekken 4, and Tekken 5, with the PSP also getting its own version of the latter in the shape of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. Tekken 6 saw the series debut on PS3 in 2009, which was followed by Tekken Tag Tournament 2 three years ago. The upcoming Tekken 7 will be the first instalment in the venerable fighting franchise to hit current-generation consoles. To date, the series has sold 44 million copies worldwide.
