Ubisoft has announced that the beta for Tom Clancy’s The Division pulled in 6.4 million gamers, making it the biggest beta for a new IP on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The teaser launched on February 19 for the PS4 and PC, with the average gamer spending four hours and 52 minutes. Over a third of this time was spent in the game’s Dark Zone, with slightly under 50 percent going rogue.
Despite its success, Star Wars Battlefront still holds the record for a PS4 and Xbox One beta, which notched up 9.5 million players last fall.
"We want to thank the millions of people who joined in on The Division’s Open Beta," commented Magnus Jansen, the game’s Creative Director. "We hope everybody enjoyed playing, and we think the beta is going to help ensure a great launch for the game. We’re looking forward to everyone getting their hands on the full game when The Division is released on March 8th."
Developed by Ubisoft Massive in conjunction with the industry giant’s Annecy and Reflections studios, The Division takes place in New York City, U.S., following the outbreak of a mysterious diseases on Black Friday. In just five days, the government collapses as the pandemic spreads, with supplies such as food and water cut off to survivors, resulting in widespread chaos.
Players form part of the Strategic Homeland Division (SHD), a specialised group who live seemingly ordinary lives but are given authority by the United States government to combat various threats caused by the disease, and help to get society back on its feet by whatever means necessary.
The Division is scheduled for release worldwide on March 8.
