Shun Escayg has been named as the creative director behind Naughty Dog‘s upcoming The Last of Us Part 1 for PS5, having also held that title on Marvel’s Avengers back when he worked at Crystal Dynamics.
Having previously served at Naughty Dog as a cinematic animator for The Last of Us and Uncharted 4, Escagy departed the Sony-owned studio to front the superhero title at Tomb Raider reboot studio Crystal Dynamics. However, last April he confirmed he has rejoined Naughty Dog.
So proud of our team on the incredible work done on The Last Of Us remake trailer shown at the #sgf2022. This game was my introduction into making games and so holds a very special place in the feels for me. Honoured to be the Creative Director on this remake!
Escayg isn’t the only one to have returned to his roots. Matthew Gallant, who previously served as game designer on The Last of Us, is now game director on the PS5 remake.
Excited to share that I got to step into the role of game director on The Last of Us Part I, working alongside Shaun Escayg. I was a fledgling designer when I worked on the original almost a decade ago, and it’s been a delight to revisit this beloved game.
The Last of Us Part 1 is pencilled in for a September 2, 2022 release on PS5 and will also be coming to PC at a later date.
