The Last Of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Fan Mod Has Been Cancelled At The Request Of Sony

Modder Speclizer has revealed that they have been contacted by Sony Interactive Entertainment regarding the planned multiplayer mod for the PC version of The Last of Us Part 2, requesting that it not be released to the public.

“Hey everyone, as you all know, the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod that has been in development since January was supposed to [be released] this month,”they wrote in a post on X. “Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released. Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day but I hope you’ll continue to follow me onto the next project, this time something of my own.”

The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod started production back in January 2026 and was set to launch this month, although will now sadly never see the light of day.

Naughty Dog had originally planned to include multiplayer in The Last of Us Part 2, but was scrapped in favour of releasing a standalone online experience at a later date. This was later revealed to be The Last of Us Online, a separate multiplayer project set within the series’ post-apocalyptic universe that was in production for a number of years before the developer decided to pull the plug.

According to the game’s director earlier this year, The Last of Us Online had come a long way in development by the time it was cancelled, having reached about 80% complete.
