The Netherlands Is Poised To Ban Loot Boxes In Video Games, As New Motion Gains Bi-Partisan Support

The Netherlands could soon be the next country to ban loot boxes in video games outright, as a new motion gains support from six different political parties on either side of the aisle.

“Children in video games are manipulated to purchase microtransactions” the motion read. It also called loot boxes and microtransactions addicting, and cited the fact that Belgium has also banned loot boxes for games sold in the country.

The motion would need to pass both the senate in The Netherlands and the house, though due to the support across multiple parties it seems unlikely for it to fail. Altogether, the parties backing the motion reportedly hold a majority of seats in both the house and the senate.

Loot boxes have been a contentious topic in games for some time, and of late have been a hot topic in governments across the globe.

As previously mentioned, Belgium has already taken steps to ban them it their country, and it seems that unless developers stop using loot boxes, the same thing could happen in more countries beyond The Netherlands.
