Eidos Montreal has seemingly poured cold water over last week’s reports that the studio is busy chiseling away on a new Thief game.
Talk of Thief 5 (or if you’d rather, the second installment in the rebooted Thief franchise) surfaced alongside chatter of a movie adaptation of the popular stealth-action franchise, with a production company claiming that the new game was in development alongside the planned movie.
However, Eidos Montreal’s David Anfossi has responded to the claims on Twitter, and his response is pretty clear cut: Thief 5 is not happening.
Apparently we’re developing Thief 5 game! So now we have a title… We just have to build a team,a budget… Forget it! @EidosMontreal pic.twitter.com/suiAgcK7sU

The most recent entry in the Thief franchise was released on PS4, PS3, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 back in 2014, and acted as a reboot for the long-running series. Unfortunately, the game didn’t exactly become a critical darling, leaving the future of the brand up in the air. Nonetheless, not long after launch Eidos Montreal made it clear it was eager to release a follow-up at some point:
"Nothing’s announced yet but we’re very keen to see how people respond to the game […] We’ve built a really big universe around the first game, and there’s a lot of layers to it – the world is really deep […] so there’s a lot of possibilities to jump on.” Would you like to see Thief 5 hit PS4?
