This Week’s Top Stories: May 31 – June 6, 2010

Given that it’s less than two weeks until E3, we were under the assumption that the majority of the juiciest stories had dried up as the part of the tranditional pre-E3 drought. We stand corrected. If anything, this week provided some of the tastiest morsels of recent weeks, thanks in no small part to Guerilla Games’ teaser trailer for Killzone 3, a firm release window for one of the PS3’s hottest upcoming MMOs, and a rather tasty rumor concerning Bethesda’s E3 plans.

Check out our top picks of the week’s news below, along with our thoughts on each story.

Kitase: Final Fantasy VII remake would take ten times longer to create than FFXIII

And the accolade for the most conspicuous eyebrow-raising article of the week goes to Square’s claims that a FFVII remake would take ‘ten times longer’ to churn out in comparison to FFXIII’s 3-4 year development cycle. So, by that margin, we’re looking at around 30-40 years until we get to embark on Cloud Strife’s genre-defining adventure in HD. Blimey Square, we get it — a FFVII remake really isn’t all that likely to happen. We just hope the next PS3 entry in the franchise – FF Versus XIII – is worth the wait.

Rockstar scales down E3 plans

With less than a fortnight to go until the biggest games show on the planet, we’d expect a few significant stories to start trickling out pertaining to the Los Angeles-based convention. Rumors of megaton announcements, special guest appearances, anything along those lines are more than welcome. Hearing that one the largest games companies is planning to scale down its plans for the show, however, isn’t. In this case, we’re talking about Rockstar, who has apparently decided not to display the likes of Max Payne 3 and LA Noire at E3. A pity too, as this year’s show is shaping up to be one of the best in recent years. Sob.

DC Universe finally gets a release date

To say that DC Universe has been in development for quite some time is something of a gross understatement. As such, you can imagine our delight upon finding out that the super hero outing has finally attracted a release date, and the game should be with us in November of this year. Still, better keep those fingers crossed that it doesn’t also attract one of those pesky delays anytime soon too (GT5, we’re looking at you).

Rumor: Bethesda to announce Elder Scrolls V at E3

It’s been four years since we indulged in the perils and pleasures of the realm of Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, so we couldn’t think of a better time to lift the lid on a fifth outing than at E3. Indeed, Bethesda has been spoiling us rotten with Fallout 3 goodness for the past few years now, so we think it’s about time the gears shifted back to the medieval delights of slaughtering goblins, ransacking houses and kitting ourselves out in a swanky new piece of armor. While we’re not ones to put much stock in to rumors, at least the source is a little more comforting this time, coming from the pages of Japan’s gaming bible, Famitsu. Then again, perhaps this ‘surprise’ announcement they speak of is an MMO? Or something completely disparate to the Elder Scrolls franchise entirely? Only time will tell.

Killzone 3 trailer will kick your head off

Do we really need to elaborate on this one? Stick the words Killzone 3 and trailer in the same sentence, and you pretty much know that you’re in for a treat. If you haven’t already seen the teaser, we recommend you grab a cuppa, put your feet up and check it out here. Color us officially pumped.

InFamous 2 officially announced, details coming to E3

After months of rumors and speculation, inFamous 2 finally reared its head this week for the first time, and will be coming exclusively to PS3 in the not too distant future. As expected, we’ll be tucking in to all there is to know about Sucker Punch’s upcoming super-powered sequel at E3, though we’ve been told that original protagonist Cole MacGrath will be returning alongside all-new powers and yet another sprawling metropolis to explore. E3 can’t come soon enough.
