Video games are becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing industries, especially after the global pandemic in 2020. Millions from all corners of the world play video games on their computers, smartphones, tablets, and even TVs because it is fun. Some people specialize in certain types of titles that also let them play alongside their friends in real time.
Aside from the classic video games, eSports are also more popular than ever before. In addition to the regular eSports titles that have been around for years, new titles join this industry every month, which affects other sectors, such as online betting. As a result, the esports bookmakers list consists of brands that keep adding new games to their betting categories and allow users to wager on what they like. Although Esports have a lot of advantages and will continue to grow in popularity, there are also a few drawbacks that people need to know. So, let’s reveal all of them.
Most eSports titles do not offer enough funds to the Tier 2 and 3 teams and players
One of the reasons why there aren’t more professional gamers around the world is because of financial reasons. While it is true that the best players in the world earn millions, this is not the case for the lower-end spectrum. Players who can’t compete with the best in the world often have financial difficulties, making it really hard to be full-time gamers.
Unfortunately, this is a big problem for all current eSports titles. Dota 2 is a prime example because almost all top-tier tournaments have millions of dollars as rewards. However, if we look at the Tier 2 and Tier 3 competitions, we can see that they barely make it to $50k, which means there is a massive difference between them.
While it’s true that most video game companies are doing everything they can do to popularize the Tier 2 and 3 tournaments and players, the event’s sponsors are simply not interested in investing their money. Video game fans only want to watch the best in action, so unless you are among the best at the specific eSport title, you may have problems earning enough money to make a living.
If we put the prize pools aside, the eSports organizations do not offer high salaries to their lesser-popular players. This is another issue that needs to be addressed.
The timezone differences
Even though this is not that big of an issue for some eSports fans, an important thing to remember is that all of the big tournaments take place in a LAN environment. Usually, they are held in a hall or a stadium located somewhere. While this offers fans who attend the event a fantastic experience, people who want to watch it from the comfort of their homes may have difficulties, especially if they live on the other side of the globe.
There are loads of examples of top-tier tournaments that get fewer viewers than the organizers want simply because they are held in a specific part of the world. The International Dota 2’s top-tier event usually takes place in the USA, which means that some matches don’t have many viewers because most players are based in Europe.
Match-Fixing
Regardless if you bet on eSports or want to watch the best teams and players in action, you may not have a good experience because of match-fixing. This continues to be one of the biggest challenges of modern eSports, affecting all games. It doesn’t matter if you are a fan of CS2, Dota 2, or something else; certain teams/players are almost always involved in match-fixing, and they are becoming so good at it that it is tough to figure out what’s going on.
The good news is that a lot of organizations have started monitoring all tournaments in an attempt to reduce the number of people involved in such activities. We will probably have to wait a lot until match-fixing is no longer a problem in eSports, but this is a step in the right duration.
