Today, Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics were officially granted control over the Deus Ex and Tomb Raider IP’s from their last owner, Square Enix.
This means that though Embracer Group had closed its deal to acquire both Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics from Square Enix, the two studios can now go back to the IPs they’re both known for.
“We are excited to inform you that Crystal Dynamics has taken control of several game franchises—including Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain—from the games’ previous owner, Square Enix Limited” said Crystal Dynamics today, on its website.
Eidos Montreal also posted the news on its website, as an update to its terms of service.
“To put things simply, the big change is that Eidos-Montréal (or its affiliates) is now the owner of the games it developed, like the Deus Ex and Thief games, and the controller of the data obtained from the various gameplay metrics tracked in its titles.”
We already heard that Eidos Montreal wants to return to the world of Deus Ex, and now that it officially can, it’ll be interesting to see what comes next for the franchise.
