Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, reckons there’s room for two major Japanese-set open-world games in the same year, following confirmation that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been delayed into 2025 — thus putting it out in the same window as Ghost Of Yotei.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows was originally scheduled for release in November of this year, but yesterday Ubisoft confirmed that it was being pushed into February 2025 as the publisher said it needed more time in the oven to deliver the best experience possible. Ghost of Yotei was announced during State Of Play earlier this week for a 2025 launch.
Naturally, a lot of people have pointed out the comparisons between the two games; they’re open-world titles set in an historical Japanese setting after all, but Guillemot points out that Shadows’ use of dual protagonists ensures it stands out.

There’s a lot of space for very high-quality games, and those two games can sell very well. The focus is to really make sure that we deliver a fantastic experience with this dual protagonist approach and two different and complimentary gameplays…. a setting taking place in feudal Japan should be really enticing.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is pencilled in for release on February 14, 2025, while Ghost of Yotei has yet to attract a concrete launch date but is due out next year.
