Ubisoft Montreal Cancels Unannounced Game

Developer Ubisoft Montreal has announced that it has shelved an announced project that has been in the works for three years. Louis de Carufel, a graphics programmer for the company, confirmed the news in a tweet, although fortunately, there’s been no layoffs.

Mystery Ubisoft Montreal Title Cancelled

I just learned that the project I’ve been working on for the past 3 years has been canceled. This is tough news because I’ve been working with all these people for around 7 years, during which we have shipped both Watch Dogs and Watch Dogs 2.

However, the good thing about working at @UbisoftMTL is that nobody in the team has lost their job! Every single one of the 200+ people in the team will be reassigned to an existing project in the studio (there’s over 15 of them). We even get to choose ehwich ones we prefer!

So it’s tough news, but I now see it as an opportunity to learn a new engine and meet new people. Some of the projects are shipping in 2020, while others are just starting. It’s gonna be a difficult choice!

There’s no clue as to what the game was, but considering it had over 200 people working on it, we can can safely assume it was a pretty major project. A new Splinter Cell perhaps? We hope not, because I don’t think we could take the heartbreak.

Ubisoft has a lot of titles in the works right now, with Watch Dogs Legion, Rainbow Six Quarantine, and Gods and Monsters all due to ship during the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Beyond that, there’s the likes of Skull and Bones and Beyond Good & Evil 2 in the pipeline, as well as a new Assassin’s Creed.

Right now it’s unknown if we’ll ever find out what the cancelled game was, but regardless, there’s plenty to be excited for in regards to Ubisoft’s upcoming portfolio.
