UK Charts: Gran Turismo Sport hits pole position

Gran Turismo Sport has debuted at the top of the U.K. All Format Chart following its release in Europe on October 17.

The latest entry in Polyphony Digital’s racing simulator franchise enjoyed stronger launch sales than the original Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 6. However, Chart-Track notes that its performance was "nowhere near the series high of 2010’s Gran Turismo 5."

Interestingly, the PS4-exclusive racer sold over three times as many physical copies as Microsoft’s Forza 7.

GT Sport is the first major entry in the series not to include a number in the title. Creator Kazunori Yamauchi has said that the game represents a new era for the venerable racing series.

Furthermore, the game’s detailed car models are of such high quality that Yamauchi-san believes they could be used in Sony’s next-generation console. He also believes the game could comfortably run at 8K on the PS5.

The game hasn’t been without its criticism from long-time fans. Chiefly, players have expressed disappointment at the lack of a full campaign mode, something which Yamauchi-san has recently explained is due to users not having as much knowledge on cars as they once did.

GT Sport’s success knocks Electronic Arts juggernaut FIFA 18 down to second place. Meanwhile, South Park: The Fractured But Whole debuts at number three, followed by WWE 2K18 at number four.
