Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Dev Almost Gave Nathan Drake A Stamina Bar

Speaking on YouTube Channel Couch Soup, Josh Scherk, the co-writer on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, has revealed that developer Naughty Dog almost implemented a stamina bar for protagonist Nathan Drake in the game.

A lot of the stuff that happens early on are prototypes of design things that eventually make it in [to a game]. We were looking to do some interesting things with the climbing mechanics [in Uncharted 4]… the long story short version of that is that we did all these interesting things with a stamina bar, trying to make it feel more challenging.

Naughty Dog shelved the idea in the end as the studio felt it “got in the way [of how Naughty Dog] liked to blend [its] platforming gunplay.”

We didn’t want to have people paying attention to stamina while they were also outrunning people shooting [at them] and all that kind of stuff. We wanted to keep everything quick and moving along.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was released for the PS4 in May 2016, and was remastered for the PS5 earlier this year as part of the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection.
