Uncharted 4 Director Bruce Straley Feels Modern AAA Games Have Become ‘Boring’

Bruce Straley, a former Naughty Dog developer who served as director on the likes of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Last of Us, reckons AAA games have lost steam over the years, to the point where they’ve become “boring.”

Speaking with EDGE magazine 428, Straley commented, “I think the verbs and experiences we’re delivering in the triple-A space are…I wanna say boring. Just, across the board in triple-A, it feels like there’s no opportunity to inject fresh, innovative ideas.” He also revealed there’s an idea for an AAA he has brewing, but admitted, “I will probably never make it.”

God Of War Laufey, I look at that game, and every pixel is mindblowing. The amount of work and skill that’s gone into every single frame… I’ve made those kinds of games, and I’m still blown away. But when I actually look at what you’re doing in the game. I’m not excited. And that’s nothing against the God Of War team. Just, across the board in triple-A, it feels like there’s no opportunity to inject fresh, innovative ideas.

Since leaving Naughty Dog, Straley has established his own studio, Wildflower Interactive, and is currently developing puzzle-platformer Coven of the Chicken Foot. The project was announced during 2025’s The Game Awards and is so far confirmed for release on PC.
