UPDATE:
After contacting CTXM, it has been confirmed that the game will only be released on Xbox Live Arcade.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE:
Treat this as a rumor until it is confirmed, but Xbox Spies reports that the Official Xbox Magazine has an article regarding a sequel/remake of The Warriors, the cult-classic 1979 film about gangs battling it out across New York City.
Rockstar Games released a PS2, Xbox version of the film back in 2005 and a PSP version appeared in 2007. However, it’s believed that a movie sequel/remake (this part is unclear) is currently in development by director Tony Scott and that they’ll be a videogame released to tie-in with its release.
The Internet Movie Database isn’t the most reliable of sources as it can be edited by anyone, however the date of the movie’s release has recently changed to 2010. If indeed Xbox Spies is right in its report that OXM claims that a videogame equivalent is in the making, then we can expect it to tie-in with the movie next year.
We’re excited about a PS3 version of The Warriors. It’s a franchise that has the potential to be an epic beat ’em game on the next-gen consoles if handled correctly. Xbox Spies reports that CTXM, the company behind a number of casual games, including Astropop and Zuma Deluxe, will develop the game, rather than Rockstar as we’d have expected. However, it doesn’t seem like CTXM would be the type of company that would be called in to develop such a huge game. This is where the rumor seems to lose a bit of credibility.
We’ll just have to wait for firm and official confirmation, unless someone can conjure up a scan of the OXM article?
