User-generated content to help drive Home

After all of the recent Home news spanning the last couple of months, we understand its only causing you, the reader, to become more anxious in wanting to get your hands on the highly anticipated online social platform.

Chances are, the comment section will be littered with remarks such as, "Hurry up and release it already." We apologize, but this isn’t going to contain a release date, just more information to keep you salivating for the hype machine that is PlayStation Home.

The Creative Director and Lead Artist of Home, John Venables, had the following to say on the forthcoming online service:

"From day one we’re going to give [users] basic customization, analogous with other games, but we will hopefully be increasing the tools that we give to users over time, to give them more control, maybe to ultimately provide their own content."

One of the things concerning user-generated content that is an obvious issue is the opportunity for people to submit content inappropriate for a younger audience. This is why the Home creators have decided to implement the user-generated content permissions in baby steps.

Creative director, Ron Festejo, understand these concerns and it’s refreshing to know Sony acknowledges them, "[F]or PlayStation, and the type of audiences we appeal to, I think there’s a certain level of responsibility that we have to ensure that offensive stuff isn’t in the universe that we create."

However, this doesn’t take away from them realizing how important user-generated content will be to the community, "User-created content is the Holy Grail, with games like LittleBigPlanet that’s all about user-created content”, added Festejo.

“That’s going to be an interesting litmus test for us to see the kinds of things generated by users because those guys are also pushing the boundaries in that area."

As more information is released on Home, it does make you want it that much sooner. Regardless, it is comforting to know that Sony is taking the cautionary steps in providing a service that will not only be appropriate but acceptable for users of all ages.
