Watch Dogs 2 review roundup: What the hack is going on?

The original Watch Dogs was certainly a proof of concept, but failed miserably at key areas, notably the character of Aiden Pearce, who has the misfortune of becoming one of gaming’s worst protagonists to date. Nonetheless, the premise of hacking your way into bank accounts, phones, and traffic lights held a lot of appeal, and the open-world setting provided a grand playground to test your geeky powers. Sadly, it was a bit of a mess, and the visual downgrade didn’t exactly help matters either. Enter Watch Dogs 2, which features a new city, new character, and a staggering amount of content packed under its hood.

Understandably, there’s been a lot riding on Ubisoft’s hacking sequel, with those who saw promise in the original game keeping fingers crossed that Watch Dogs 2 can not only fix its predecessor’s glaring issues, but build on them and turn it into something that the original always should have been—sound familiar? It should do, as that’s pretty much what happened with Assassin’s Creed.

The wait’s over now though, as Watch Dogs 2 is unleashed today for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, and the critics have spoken. What’s the verdict? Find out below in our Watch Dogs 2 review roundup. When you’re done, read our review-in-progress to see what we think of the game so far.
