Wizards Of The Coast Denies Reports That Tencent Is Looking To Acquire Dungeons & Dragons IP From Hasbro

Wizards of the Coast has issued a statement denying reports from earlier today that Tencent is looking to acquire the Dungeons and Dragons IP from Hasbro.

The studio provided the following statement to VGC:

We regularly talk to Tencent and enjoy multiple partnerships with them across a number of our IPs. We don’t make a habit of commenting on internet rumors, but to be clear: we are not looking to sell our D&D IP. We will keep talking to partners about how we bring the best digital experiences to our fans. We won’t comment any further on speculation or rumors about potential M&A or licensing deals.

Wizards of the Coast is in possession of the Dungeons and Dragons IP, and are a subsidiary of Hasbro, who acquired the studio back in 1999. Wizards of the Coast has made a name for itself specialising in fantasy and science-fiction-themed content, and in February 2021 became the lead part of the newly-established ‘Wizards & Digital’ division at Hasbro.

The original report claimed that Hasbro’s financial issues were one of the main reasons behind selling the IP, and had reportedly looked at Larian Studios, the developer behind Balur’s Gate III, as a potential buyer for Dungeons & Dragons.

However, Larian apparently didn’t have the necessary funds for a buyout, and so Hasbro looked to Tencent, which owns 30% of Larian.
