In case you didn’t know, Microsoft is set to launch its own mid-console generation upgrade with the Xbox One X later this year for a hefty $499 price tag. While the Xbox One X is considerably more expensive than the PS4 Pro, it’s substantially more powefu too; with 40 percent more processing power, being able to play 4K Blu-ray out of the box and more.
The Xbox One X’s tech advantage has not escaped Microsoft’s mind when it comes to pushing the hardware as "better" than the PS4 Pro. In an interview iwth the Official Xbox Magazine UK (Issue #155, October 2017), Xbox General Manager dave McCarthy muses that there aspects of the PS4 Pro that are the same as the Xbox One X, but the added horsepower and other technical benefits make it the "top-end" experience of the two.
"Well on some levels I think there’s aspects of even Xbox One S that I’d compare [to the PS4 Pro] in terms of HDR gaming, 4K video streaming capabilities, 4K Blu-ray support. There are only two consoles in the world that support 4K Blu-ray, and they’re both Xbox Ones – Xbox One S and Xbox One X. I make more of a comparison [with Xbox One X] to what the higher end PCs are doing right now.
There is a big difference with 40% more processing power, in terms of ensuring that consistent frame rate, including that frame buffer that’s going to get you all those 4K textures, ensuring the spatial audio is going to be at a premium for you. So it really is that top-end experience."
While what McCarthy said might in a technical sense be true, we all know it’s about the games, and in that regard, Sony runs circles with the Xbox One, and no technical advantage can bridge that. Everyone’s favorite analyst Michael Pachter also thinks the PS4 will outsell the Xbox One X due to the lower price.
Do you agree with McCarthy’s statements? Will the Xbox One X’s technical advantage be able to give the "top-end" experience Microsoft is banking on?
