Xbox Boss Says The Idea Of Exclusives Has Become ‘Antiquated For Most People’

Sarah Bond, President of Xbox, has said that people are moving away from the idea of console exclusive games, suggesting the idea is “antiquated” for a lot of people nowadays.

Speaking with Mashable, Bond said that players expect to see most games available across multiple devices, posting to the likes of Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Minecraft as not being locked to one specific platform. Microsoft of course has been pivoting towards multiplatform gaming for many of its major franchises since last year, bring Forza, Gears of War, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Hi-Fi Rush, and more to Sony and Nintendo consoles.

We’re really seeing people evolve way past that. Like, the biggest games in the world are available everywhere. You look at Call of Duty, you look at Minecraft, you look at Fortnite, you look at Roblox. That’s actually what’s really driving community in gaming. That’s where people gather, they have experiences. And the idea of locking it to one store or one device is antiquated for most people.

You want to be able to play with your friends anywhere, regardless of what they’re on, and we’re really leaning into that with this experience because it just opens up another way for you to play – as does cloud, as does PC, as do the consoles that we all own and have in our living room.

Call of Duty was recently touched on by Glen Schofield, the creator of the Dead Space franchise, when he admitted he was ‘immensely worried‘ about the franchise’s future under the Microsoft umbrella. The Activision-published series is now owned by the Xbox format holder after it was purchased in a massive $68.7 billion dollar acquisition a few years ago, although Microsoft has been committed to releasing new Call of Duty games on PlayStation hardware alongside its own systems.
