SEGA’s Yakuza Kiwami, a remake of the classic 2005 gangster-’em-up, has sold through a combined total of over 150,000 units in Japan for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
The PS4 version of Yakuza, known as Ryu ga Gotoku (‘Like a Dragon’) in its native country, sold 103,256 units at launch, with the last-generation version of the remake pulling in 60,427 units (via NeoGAF).
Yakuza Kiwami ships with a playable demo of the hotly anticipated sixth instalment in the action-RPG franchise on the PS4, so it’s little surprise that the remake sold more copies on Sony’s current-generation console than on the PS3.
Yakuza Kiwami is a full-blown remake of the PS2 original, featuring overhauled visuals and sound effects, as opposed to just slapping on a 1080p coat of paint and leaving it relatively untouched. In addition, the remake also features new mini-games, an enhanced combat system, and fresh scenarios not seen in the PS2 version.
Of course, the question still remains for western fans if Kiwami will make the jump to the U.S. and Europe, as SEGA has still yet to confirm plans for a localised version of the game. Similarly, the publisher has not confirmed whether or not Yakuza 6 will arrive in the west, although the game isn’t due in Japan until late 2016.
Still, it hasn’t been all bad news for fans. Yakuza 5 finally arrived in the U.S. last December via the PlayStation Store, and SEGA has announced that Yakuza Zero will also be arriving in North America at some point in the near future.
