Sony Pictures Entertainment has lifted the wraps off the first trailer for Resident Evil, the upcoming Zach Cregger-helmed cinematic reboot of Capcom’s 30-year-old survival horror franchise.
Resident Evil is the third attempt at adapting the zombie-blasting series, with the first being the franchise helmed by Paul W.S. Anderson that began in 2002 and starred Milla Jovovich. After six films concluding with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the series’ reins were handed to filmmaker Johannes Roberts, who wrote and directed 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which combined the stories of Resident Evil 1 and 2 into a single night, with mixed results despite featuring multiple characters from the games.
Now, Cregger’s Resident Evil, which is due in cinemas on September 18, is set to follow Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who is caught up in what is seemingly a zombie outbreak. Cregger made it clear previously that his film isn’t a retelling of any of the Resident Evil games, but a brand new story that is set within the same timeframe as Resident Evil 2.
