Zelnick says Take-Two ‘won’t annualise’ GTA, Red Dead

Take-Two big cheese Strauss Zelnick has pledged that the publishing giant has no plans to “annualise” key franchise such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.

GTA has proven a monster success for the company, with the last entry, GTA IV, shifting an eye watering 17 million copies worldwide as of June 2010. Likewise, the rapturously received Red Dead Redemption also pulled in the punters, moving 6.9 million units to date since its launch in May this year.

However, Zelnick made it clear Take-Two has no plans to churn out fresh instalments on a yearly basis ala Call of Duty, believing that doing so would be detrimental to the overall package quality – not to mention the fear that consumers would be burnt out by the whole affair.

Elsewhere, the executive also touched on the firm’s digital and mobile business, stating he expects the sector to grow from less than ten percent of revenue to 25-30 percent “over time.” However, he added he doesn’t expect a digital-only future to rear its head any time soon.

"I still think in five years the packaged goods business will dominate," he told Reuters. "It’s kind of irrelevant to us – basically the same gross margin, basically the same risk."
