A mysterious firmware update, firmware 2.42, has just gone live.
To be entirely honest, we have absolutely no idea what this firmware does. It's odd; usually Sony prompts everyone before these sort of updates occur, but this time nobody has received any prior notice.
Just go download it we suppose. We'll be updating this article momentarily as more specific details on this new update arise.
Update:
It appears that the Trophies have been optimized and are loading much quicker now.
Update #2
Official word from Sony: "This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software."
Update #3
For those of you having difficulty downloading the new firmware update via the PS3, we have provided a link to download the update to your PC and transfer to your system. Click here to download firmware 2.42.

wow that's nuts! I'll try it!
Coming home to play soul caliber 4 and I see this. It better be something useful but its probably a security patch of some sort
Everyone calm down. Its nothing new or big just another software support firmware.
why do they call it mysterious update sony never says when theres going to be a firmwire update
Sony usually tells you a day or two out - or in the case of a big update, months in advance (as was the case with 2.40) - but they didn't mention this at all, so I would constitute that as being mysterious.
Wow. Trophies load faster. That does me a lot of good because I don't have any games that support the feature. I'm still amazed that Sony would include a feature that had very limited support. It's like putting an oxygen mask on a dead person. They should have made 2.4 with in-game and launched a later firmware with trophies when several games included the feature.
Ok, I saw this update and I cannot seem to Download it. Everytime it gets to the percentage bar...it says established connection is now gone or something...this happens to me everytime, does anyone else have the same problem or is it just me? Please help.
LOL @ 11. "putting an oxygen mask on a dead person" that's priceless, i rofl'd
You can now play X-Box 360 games on your PS3 ;)
psn id: gingo... to b honest i dont even see the trophys loading any faster, i'm guessing it was a minor big fix or server upgrade
ive tried downloading this update at least three times and every time it said connection to the server could not be established. so i connected directly to the the ethernet port and im downloading it right now lets see how far i get =/
i found it. it organizes your videos!!!! whatever. wow.and i got so exited when i saw there was a new firmware
@TNT0403
I'm having the same problem as you; Can't establish a good connection to the server. I am also using an ethernet cable aswell. This is really starting to make me mad.
@dman0112001
its been like that since yesterday
twilight93
you beat me 2 it
my guess is that this will help Life with Playstation, this thursday as a download from the store.
remember the update and downtime the week before the movie store?
I figured it out woot!! It does nothing yes did you here that nothing woot yes yes yesss
it might be a minor update to get prepared for HOME or something.
I just hope it helps with the mics on BF:BC! Everything else can wait.
@24 and 27
My browser freezes now to for some reason, i was downloading por....game trailers and it freezes, but only when i have multiple tabs open
@11, why would game devs make trophy support if there is none on the PS3. Use your brain moron the PS3 has to support trophies first before the devs will do it. Some people.
Not really new patch, if it would then the FW would have been 2.5 or something.
Uh, because certain devs have been talking about trophy support for--I don't know, maybe several months--so they knew the feature was coming. So mister smart guy, how is it that burnout paradise was able to add custom soundtracks after game shipped? Sony gave them the tools to implement the feature BEFORE it launched. Sony should have worked with the devs to ensure that a few of their more popular games had trophies ready when they launched the feature. Let me translate this for you junior--what Sony did was like your father putting a condom on after your mother has left for work. Oh, and a little word of advice, it's best to be thought a fool and be quiet than to post on a message board and remove all doubt.
I've also noticed that my ps store loads a lot faster now. Would take a few seconds on the last update.
you guys are waiting too much from a 0.01 update.
don't download it!! Its the aliens!!! There trying to eat our souls!!!
omg! what can it be?!
i can't download off my ps3 either. I'm downloading of my pc here : www.sendspace.com/file/bqcaf5
So far it seems to be downlloading ok.
We are hosting for you guys on our server if you want to download it to your PC
i love it this way. just drop the update without letting people know.
After 2.40/.41, audio CD's took triple the time to DL info from CDDB (you know, where it automatically comes up with the info on the licensed CD you just put in your PS3?). Can someone check to see if that's faster now (like before 2.40/.41)?
You gotta love the random firmware updates. Its like a suprise :)
Hmm, will try it and see if it magically fixes my blu-ray player
This will not fix your BR player in your ps3. Get it fixed, I had the same problem.
???

Was that in response to my post. My BD player always worked, it's CD database thing that's slow since 2.40/.41...
Some people are idiots they think just because PS3 have trophy support now that with a download and installment that every game thats out will have trophy support. ok 1 or 3 games have trophies in it ok so what trophies popped up in the ending of spring. Devs got a sh!t load of other projects to do then come back to a game thats out just to add trophies through out a game. in other words JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A CASKET DOSNT MEAN YOUR GOING TO DROP DEAD. fall back if the games thats out happens to have trophy support that good. if the games thats coming out this holiday dont support trophies then you have a argument. till then shut up about games thats out not having trophies
Dude grow up, your getting so hot and bothered about a PS3 function (trophies), one that is mainly aimed at teenagers.
Chill, there are better things to get all enraged about. :D
@ BayBud - Dam right!
Has anyone else's downlad speed been slow on either PSN or getting FW updates since 2.4 came out? My speeds have suffered a lot since getting it and I don't understand why. Is there anything I can try to get it humming along again?
this update has screwed my ps3 over, all starting from 2.41 firmware. 2.4 was the best firmware id ever had cause well the XMB but overall it made warhawk not freeze anymore. man was i happy. everything was fine untill gay 2.41 was released. it was sopposed to help all the problems that i didnt have and the funny thing is, is that the problems that i didnt have, i did have after 2.41 and it started to freeze again. i was hoping this update would improve the stabability so warhawk wouldnt freeze again. but no it didnt it frooze 2 times in 1 hour around. then my bro was playing rockband and out of the blue frooze for rockband!!! warhawk was the only game that freezes and now rockband does. im really mad and the same as you fkps3 mine has also suffered slowness. well this is my problem soo i need to say that.
They would NOT release an COMPLETE firmware update for:
Official word from Sony: "This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software."
I expect it contains some, if not all portions of Home.
maybe it will fix my rainbow problems.... ever since last update it lags all the time
well hopefully they fix the freezing bug when i play games my ps3 freezes and i have to switch it off @ the back of the console, never had it untill the last update i got!!!
@56
Home is a separate download that even when you have downloaded, dynamically downloads and installs each "area" the first time you go to that area. It has little to nothing to do with the firmware except for maybe a minor API tweak here or there.
Home is too large to include inside of the firmware, and no reason to include it, just like Folding@Home, a separate program that only downloads if you choose to use it.
Fixed my bluray ... needed cleaning disc put in it. Probably a good idea to remind anyone with bluray problems to try this as a first solution ... which Sony didn't even suggest when I called them. Suprisingly!
Anyone else notice that 2.41 added a nice "turn off system when update has installed" option?
Thanks for all the updates sony. Sorry for all of you who had problems from the updates. I hope they all get fix and any problems that you had in the past as well go away.
psn id: I95SOUTH<--- Sony's ghost speaker.
ITs good to see Sony taking care of business, as they have a lot of catching up to do. I think its a good thing, but I will probably be forever frustrated at how horrible the PSN is. The store is great, but the PSN is just soooo slow. Yes, I'm comparing it to xbox live, but it shouldn't be slow and laggy. I have a 1gb fiber to the home connection. If Sony could make a service equal to xbox live, I would pay for it. The small annual fee is definately worth it.
had issues with it, downloaded it today, now it doesnt read the BD discs in the drive, apparently FIFA isnt in my machine... well id avoid it until 2.43
I just saw this last night. I don't care if we have an update, but at least things are being updated in the first place. I also don't have any games with trophies yet so I could care less about that part.
Sony Customer Service never ceases to amaze me with its efficiency. I downloaded the update about on Monday, it immediately caused problems for me by not loading or acknowledging the presence of BD content in the disk tray. I emailed Sony, and with a swift reply I was given a reference and phone number. Rang the number, and was answered quickly by call centre standards, they talked me through it and we came to a solution. They will be delivering me a new console on Tuesday. I have to say that being a Sony obsessed nut like I am, this kind of service only strengthens my affections for a brand who are so clearly consumer focussed. I like 360s but I'd have my ps3 over one anyday...
