120GB-160GB PS3 a possibility?

Posted on January 28th, 2008 at 09:16 EDT

Following reports in regards to the recent cut down on the 80GB PS3 console that many retailers are apparently pursuing, rumours are circulating that Sony might be introducing a newer, more powerful PlayStation 3 console.

A report on website Ars Technia states:

"Sony is, in fact, phasing out the 80GB PS3. Sony is going to stay with the two-SKU approach though, and the prices look to stay the same.”

“I heard sirens in the background, and the mole seemed nervous. "The Spiderman 3 pack-in will disappear as well once the 80GB unit is gone. In order to maintain a similar value proposition to the 80GB/Spiderman 3 bundle, I expect to see a storage increase to 120 or 160GB at the same price point, plus the new Dual-Shock 3 controller... what are you trying to accomplish with this story?"

"I'm just trying to get to the bottom of Sony's plans for their hardware so my readers can decide whether or not they should buy now, or hold off. But I'm only one man,"

As of now this is only a rumor, but one which has many factual indicators pointing in the direction of something to expect later in the future.

We should remind our readers that Ars Technia has inside sources in which they have previously dug to for information. Thus far, most of the hidden information they un-earthed later proved to be correct.

Stay tuned for more information as we get it.

BD_Blackazz, go to Best Buy and ask for where you can find a 2.5" SATA hard drive.  You can get one really cheap for a huge amount of storage.  Then Sony has a guide to installing them as well.  Or you can get that 160gig external that they sell for the PS3 at Best Buy.

Glad I waited! I cannot wait for Dual Shock 3! I have a feeling they'll only do 120gig, that's a big seperation in storage if they keep 40-120 for $100 more.

If you ask me, this article should be changed. The phrase "newer, more powerful PS3" is extremely misleading. We're talking about nothing more than a larger hard drive, which doesn't make it any more powerful.

Come on you people. Why are you always talking about 40,60,80,120 gigabytes? The drives *does not matter*. Just upgrade it! Why not get a 250 or 500 if the drive is what you care about the most? I recently upgraded my 60 model. The thing I care about is the stuff I cannot change, like memory cards or backward compability.

If they are releasing a new SKU I want to know if I should buy it, or if I should just wait and buy myself a Dualshock 3 instead. The size of the drive is not important.

Two SKUs are okay but I hope that they do come out with another one cuz that 40gb is not cool for me. I like my card readers and my 4 usb ports and my backwards compatibility

@DARKBLADE1. Whats the problem wit Sony giving more storage space to the new customers? You payd more but you got a PS3 to play om long before the costomers who purchase the new PS3 sku when it comes! And if you want more storage switch your 60GB HDD for a larger one. I did change my 60GB to a 320GB ant it works excelent! I think its a good thing if Sony start with a more praiseworthy sku. You to benefit from it in the long run, because the result from more people buying the ps3 is better games with a greater number of games to choice from!

I would think that's a smart move, because they're totally screwing people over if they only sell a system with no backwards compatability for PS2 at all. Just imagine finding out you couldn't play Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy X again. Oh lord, what a horrible, horrible thought...

@Numba1boy: That's the way marketing works. You wouldn't complain about getting a refund because you can get a PS2 for like a hundred dollars now, prices go down. I hate people who complain about prices going down because they didn't think about the fact that it ALWAYS HAPPENS.

1 console, 1GB (upgrading to 300GB+ is cheap enough) BC, and built in Card reader

@ DARKBLADE1 - I agree.  I had no problem supporting Sony but when the price dropped $100 4 months after I get it, that's rediculous.

I think there is something the early supporters deserve, whether it be a game or extra controller or both.  Sony wouldn't be where they are without us.

---

I have a feeling Sony will go with a 160GB HDD.  Why stay at the same size as 360?  Show them how much more space you get for the price and shove those 120GB proprietary HDDs back at MS's face.

---

New console - No BC but with card readers, 160GB HDD, DualShock 3, $10 PSN card, 4 USB ports, and a new game (DMC4, AoT, GT5:P).

It would get everyone who hasn't got one yet started and happy, though the early adopters are getting screwed over at this point.  But really, what are you waiting for? You should have a PS3 already.

People with the 60GB console still have the best version as it has BC. I would bet that the new SKU loses BC just like the 40GB so that they can save some money for the bigger HDD.  While I dont care for the 2 SKU thing, I get where they are going. They launch with a high hardware spec and price, to test the market. Then they slowly get rid of features that are less popular to save money and lower the price. Then they add extra storage as a bonus. Its much better than what M$ did. Launch a watered down console for 400 bucks then launch an "ELITE" version a year into its life cycle with extra hardware its impossible to upgrade to without purchasing a new console. IMO the way Sony did it is much better for them and us.

your right, your not a cheap person, your a dumb person who has baseless hopes for a new 160GB ps3 model which will make games "look better".....your not a cheap person, your a dumb person who instead of upgrading their 60gb ps3 (best model out of all 4 skus) to 160gb hdd will buy another ps3 with the hopes of that new sku making the games "look better"....foolish dumb person.....

you cant complain about it and be like oh no i expected the price to stay the same for 2 years! we made the choice to support sony and buy it early! although i do think sony should come out with a super cheap sony brand HDD off the shelf like even a duplicate if they are in fact making the 160 gig , why not offer the 160 gig HDD that they use in it to buy for the ppl who got screwwed with the 20?? if they are mass producing it then it should be no problem to offer at a lower price i own a 60 gig myself and still got about half the memory but if i could pick up a 160 gig HDD for like 100-150$ i would buy tommorow!

So, would it have the same specs as the 80 GB model except with a bigger hardrive? Or would they strip it down to the 40GB model specs with just a bigger HDD?

One must keep in mind, though its a rumor, the tricks Sony can play. How do we know "more powerfull" could B hinting at an improved Emotion Emgine. Plus consider those who might know they'll damage the PS3 if they got their own HDD, or cant aford it.

what's the point of new ps3 models if they're always changing the prices and changing the features of it also, stick with a damn model and size and make it fair to everyone cause they're spending an amount of money that they could be spending on the same price that the 60GB had with a 120GB

Most people will get a Dualshock 3, and a larger hard drive regardless. I'm curious about the "more powerful" comment more than anything. What exactly does that mean?

posted 8:39pm EST - January 28th, 2008

They have to phase out the old SKU as Spidey 3 makes it into homes and with the Dual Shock 3 just about to emmerge this month or next it's less viable to have an old SKU. They cant just switch out the stuff in the box, they have to change the listing for it entirely which means the old listing has to go away.

A larger harddrive and a Dual Shock 3 is the inevitable next form of the PS3. The 40gb SKU as currently present will eventually be phased out too and a new version with the DS3 will likely appear in time.

I see no problem in this. All the early adopters complaining about getting screwed over, you're forgetting the fact that the launch 60gb is still the best SKU out right now. No compromises in backwards compatibility, among other things. Everything but HDD size has gotten worse with each new SKU, and if you are dying for more space, huge drives are easy to get, easy to install, and becoming more affordable. If Sony is screwing anyone over, it is their newer customers.

Sony staying with the two SKU approach is a no brainer, matter of fact you can probably bank on it. That is not to say all markets will have two PS3 SKUs.

well i guess time will tell what sony will do.  as far as 20 or 40 or 60 or 80 or even 1000gb, it doesn't matter to me as long as my 80gb console last for as long and longer as my ps2, i'll be one satisfied sony customer.  oh and i've had my ps2 for over 5 years, and have played countless hours on it.  It still works like i just took it out of the box.  its all about QUALITY.

Buy a usb external hard drive or upgrade the internal one or something, or even better delete those demos you never play or the trailers you've already seen!
