Sony will allegedly release the 40GB PlayStation 3 console across North America next month, according to a report on the Nielson Page.
The article cites various electronic retailers as its source, claiming that the new SKU will ship across the region from November 2 for approximately USD 400. If true, this puts the machine at USD 200 cheaper than the current 80GB model.

The 40GB console discards PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility, multi memory card slots and features two USB ports instead of the four featured on other models. The machine is currently only available in Europe, where it launched last Wednesday.
Stay tuned for more developments as they break.

WOW! The US is so lucky! This cost AU$700 here, although US$400 equates to about AU$450!!! We are so ripped off down here! Exactly the same console with major price rip off difference. Even the softwares and accessories are highly price down here! Importing games from the US would save me alot even after paying for air-charges! I really don't understand how pricing works for different countries and regions?!?! Even downloadable contents on PSN just doesn't make sense when I'm able to purchase something on the US store cheaper than the delayed AU store! Can somebody please explain this to me?

@ MatrixSixaxis Well I'm not really sure if Sony fabricates PS3's down there at Australia, but I'm going to go with no. So probably the costs of sending them down there and resupplying stock is high. Besides there must be some kind of import tax fee, which can go pretty high to, so maybe it's just that. I don't think it was chosen by Sony this way, it's the last option, it's not good for the consumer or the company.

As people have stated before.
The 80GB will be $500
The 40GB will be $400
They just want the 60GB stock to run out.
I think this is a good move, but I also think they could have hit $350 with the 40GB seing it is somewhat crippled. But for the love of God please include an HDMI/Component cable in the box guys! Nobody wants to open up their cool new PS3 on Christmass and not play HD games on their new HDTV. Include the freaking cable!

This move will put major pressure on the 360 and hopefully by the end of 08 PLAYSTATION will be the market leader once again!

I'm sorry, does someone want to tell me how the 40Gb is crippled? I already have the 60Gb, and am loving it, but if you told me I could get the 40Gb model a while back, I would have been all over that thing. Backwards compatibility? With 120 million playstation 2 owners, I'm guessing the person going for the 40Gb already has a ps2. just like me. if they don't, then you just saved yourself 200 dollars from the 80Gb. Good job, now go buy yourself a ps2 for only $169. That has the best Backwards compatibility of all. What else can you complain about? card slots? if you are goona complain about that then you, my friend, have issues.

no ps2 backwards combat. in just that i think that the 40gb might do a little less then what the 60 and 80gb do.. i bought might for many reasons not just to play the ps3 games, but to be able to go back and play alot of the old ps1/ps2 games that i have stock piled in a box.
