Jack Tretton, President of Sony Computer Entertainment America has now confirmed that the new 40GB PlayStation 3 will make it's way to the U.S., releasing on November 2 for a retail price of USD 400.
If that wasn't good enough, Tretton also confirmed that the 80GB version will be getting a hundred price cut, dropping it from USD 600 – 500.

For the new 40GB PS3, Sony has removed its ability to play PS2 games, which for some people was a selling point.
"We're choosing to focus on the PlayStation 2 consumer with the PlayStation 2, which remains incredibly relevant, and focus on the PlayStation 3 consumer with the new 40-gigabyte model and the great software coming out," Tretton said.
"Backward compatibility is a nice secondary consideration, but it's far from the number-one priority."
With this recent announcement we can only hope that the U.S market responds to the new SKU and price drop like the U.K., driving sales up 178%.
No word on Spiderman 3 being bundled with the 40GB PS3 or if the 40GB will be the white ceramic version seen in Japan and Korea, but stay tuned as PSU will keep you updated.
Update:
We have been notified that the 80GB price cut is effective immediately.
Additionally, according to Michael Pachter, an analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities in Los Angeles, the 40GB PS3 will come bundled with the Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disc as previously rumoured.

Uno. Well, hip-hop hoo-ray for the US! The white model we'll probably be released soon after the 40gb (maybe before xmas or after new years?!?). I do hope there will be a world-wide distribution of the white model, so that it can match consumers White PSP's. And also, I do hope the rest of the world gets the 80gb model as well (not that I need it).

I really think having a PS3 without backwards compatibility is rediculous. I know the 80GB is expensive, but if you break the cost down, pound for pound the 40GB PS3 is more expensive than any other PS3 out to date. Only 2 USB ports, no media card slots, 40 GB (which s no big deal, because for an extra $93 you can have yourself a 160GB PS3) and dont forget the lack of years and years worth of PS2 games to play. Done get me wrong, I hope they sell like hotcakes, but to say its cheaper is a little out there to me.

The adjustment to the 80GB model is a step in the right direction for them. They really should follow suit elsewhere.

Good moves. This may be enough to beef up sales for the holidays. I won't be suprised if we see another $50-$100 drop right at x-mas.

This absolutely suxx big time (4 us in the UK)!!! Why does Sony continue to screw PAL regoins over?! The US remain loyal to Bill Gates, whereas outside the US PS3 has outsold 360! Yet we pay £299 ($600) for 40GB model, and £350 ($700) for 60GB. By comparison they pay £200 for 40GB, and £250 for all singing 80GB...When will we get a break?...and it's even worse for the poor Aussies...$1000!! How come the regions where Sony enjoy the most success are those that get most screwed over?

UK people in comparison to US people earn more I guess lol.
That's the only explanation for that. The disparity in the US when it comes to income is HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE
Almost embarrasing.

I can understand why they took out the Emotion engine and thus not making PS2 available for gaming considering that they wanted to make this a strictly PS3 gaming system and I agree with their decision because with that decision it made the PS3 more affordable for people to buy. If people are still angry at the fact that 40GB does not have backwards compatibility then why are you buying a PS3? You mean to tell your buying a PS3 to just play 1 or 2 PS3 games and the rest PS2 games? Come people, smartin' up.

Ideas as to why the BC was cut have been tossed around, but IMHO is rather simple. While they have 2 sku's to make the price whiners somewhat happy, the expensive one is the one they want to sell the best. So they say "You can have this $400 machine to play PS3 games, but wouldnt you rather spend an extra $100 and get a version with a bigger HD, games, and the ability to play all of your old PS2 games?" It makes the expensive SKU all that more attractive. Your average consumer has a rather short attention span/memory, and will soon forget that sony yanked BC out of it, and only look at it from the value angle. I think the cheap 40 gig's main purpose is as an alternative to a stand alone BR player, so they can sneek a gaming system into the homes of people who may buy one for its BR capability alone. You have to admit, its a very nice BR player for 400 bucks
