Analyst: $100 PS3 price cut this August

Arvind Bhatia, an analyst with Sterne Agee, has claimed that ‘industry sources’ are hinting at a PlayStation 3 price cut to coincide with the release of EA Sports’ latest Madden effort this August.

According to a note penned by Bhatia yesterday, Sony is planning on reducing the cost of its flagship games console by approximately $100:

“Industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden (8/18) and the start of the back to school shopping season. This will naturally be a positive for the industry,” the note reads.

Providing the above information pans out, it appears we can expect a formal announcement at the Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany in mid-August. Until then, file this under rumor. Stay tuned.

Oh yes, this is just like every prediction everyone has made so far that hasn't come true. Are they trying to make a prediction every few months in the hopes that they'll be right for once?

Seeing how it seems like so many people are predicting a price cut, and getting it wrong, I am now adamantly hoping Sony keeps proving them wrong in sheer pettyness lol

I might as well make a prediction and say, I doubt Sony will make a price cut just before school starts, perhaps in october ready for xmas, however they won't be as generous as $100, unless of course there is a PS3 slim and they want stores to rid of the excess socks of the original.

I can't believe you report this almost every month. Sometimes more.

Last week it was getting one for E3 before that something else.

You might as well be telling people not to buy a PS3.

I'm not saying it's not getting one, but seriously, can't you see how this damages sales?

Playing into the hands of the competition.

i dont think that sony will cut the price at August , if the they gonna cut the price the ideal time will be the holiday season (at the end of this year) & also i dont think that they gonna cut the price by 100 $ cause they still loosing money  for selling the  PS3 at the current price  , if they going to cut the price it could be around 50 $ only .... i think so  :)

Yawn. Yet another prediction of a price drop that wont come true. How many times have we heard this now?

  12. coverlord

    • 5:40am EDT - June 9th, 2009

I can't ever see the price of the PS3 gettig anywhere near the 360, a small drop maybe. The PS3 is worth every dollar. Maybe if memory is cheaper or some of the other components reduce in price. The PS3 will always be more than the 360.

I agree with whoever said these fake announcements of price drops are probably hurting PS3 sales. Who would buy one now thinking that it might drop $100 in a  few months?

I guess if people keep saying the same thing over and over again about a price cut someday they might be right!

    • 7:28am EDT - June 9th, 2009

They predict a price cut every month of course they are going to be right eventually if they do that.  I went to college with a bunch of analyst. It's always a shot in the dark usually not based on anything concrete. It's like cold reading with con men.

  22. Jacksbak

    • 7:40am EDT - June 9th, 2009

Well if predictions are right, we should have had like..what? 10 price cuts by now?

And i think they need to cut the price and release GT5 at the same time in a bundle. Would sell like hot cakes!

  25. J1gs4w

I smell another bout of BS.  I find it kind of funny how I hear friends and others talk about these supposed price drops, and how they will buy a PS3 if the price drops.  When I ask if they will buy one anyway, I usually get the answer 'no'.  I am starting to smell a scheme that Microsoft is hiring these supposed analysts, to predict these drops to hold future buyers at bay.

First it was drop on Killzone 2 release back on February 27th

Then it was supposed to happen during E3 last week

Now Mid August, before Madden is released.

I hope this last prediction turns out to be true, becasue many of my friends (including 360 only owners) are waiting for that magic price to go out and buy it.

  29. Tyrien

    • 8:51am EDT - June 9th, 2009

     STOP IT.

This has been suggested by at least one analyst for the past year with a due date of every other month.

  30. fleinn

    • 9:27am EDT - June 9th, 2009

In other words: "Hold off on your PS3 purchase until March/August/October/Christmas/newyear/March/etc., folks! Because I, superior and anonymous analyst is predicting a ridiculous price- cut to a hardware kit worth more than the competitions' sku!".

Why are you even posting about it on this site?

Hopefully im wrong and it comes earlier

  35. Sedated_Experiment

    • 11:22am EDT - June 9th, 2009

Do we really need an article for every person that says a price reduction will happen?

It wont. Get over it. Its worth every cent and Sony would be ridiculous to drop the price.

  36. darthrazorback

    • 11:38am EDT - June 9th, 2009

I know more than a few people who would run out and buy one for that price.  However, we have been hearing about a price cut for so long that I will believe it when I see it.

It's another "ANALYST PREDICTION" folks, it means NOTHING. These jokers have been chanting price drop for a year and a half and it still hasn't happened yet, maybe if they just STFU maybe it'd actually happen.

  39. tic2000

    • 12:00pm EDT - June 9th, 2009

Yeah, sure. I'm an analyst too and I say that the price will drop in the next 10 years. And I have no 'industry sources'.

I don't want them to drop the price haha. Leave it as it is for now, I want my console to maintain its high price. Bought it for $500 2 years ago and I want it to stay at $500 for another year.

Price drop = HUGE sales increase, HUGE (imo of course, i'm not an analyst or anything).

  43. fleinn

    • 1:20pm EDT - June 9th, 2009

Sure. A price- cut would explode the ps3 sales (it's got nothing to do with the amount of games, or anything like that at all). Just like the once the controls were fixed in KZ2, it would sell five million in a week.

  44. veyron

    • 2:16pm EDT - June 9th, 2009

  48. markwesker

    • 3:50pm EDT - June 9th, 2009

who cares, the price is cheaper then the 360 when u tot all the costs up and i just bought the infamous ps3 bundle off amazon, cheap as chips considering im getting blu ray player aswell .  only fanboys say the 360 is cheaper.

maybe this prediction is a little more valid than others in august with madden coming out i mean whether you like it or not madden is a big seller still.  and if this promotes the system to sell better then great. but that being said it sets up for all the HUGH releases in late OCT and NOV. sony is smart to do it this time get the system reduced price out  in AUG  its starts to circulate and by NOV BAMM the world will see the greatness of Sony and all its great  games.  and in the end the world is back to being a playstation universe again!  to be honest i can see it this time and it makes all the sense in the world this time around.

    go sony.
